Gross "trompe l'oeil"?

The French term trompe l'oeil means a "trick of the eye."

And that's what's going on here. This is actually a small, round apple cake in the shape of an apple.

But as cool as this cake is, it's also sort of gross. I'm not sure why; is it because it sort of looks like a rotten apple at first glance?
