Help wipe out Poop Shame!

Gene Weingarten has a funny column about something he calls “Poop Shame.” This is embarrassment that comes from pooping in a public place.
One man keeps a second pair of shoes in his desk, which he smuggles into the bathroom and puts on in the stall so that no one knows it is him in there, doing that awful thing.
Women have confessed to participating in excruciating standoffs: bathroom duels, where two or more find themselves in neighboring stalls, each holding off on The Act, waiting for the other(s) to leave. It’s sort of the opposite of the shootout at the O.K. Corral.
Lately, I’ve been hearing tales of toilet tent-building. Appalled at the gap between stall and door that might allow others to know at a glance who is in there, people hang toilet-paper down to cover it.
Via.
All of these Poop Shame strategies strike me as insane. I say, I poop and I’m proud!

Unless it’s noisy. Or sort of stinks. (In these cases, please don’t look at me.)

How does a fart in a social setting affect a person's views of the farter?

Okay, I just read an awesome post at Neurotic Physiology about a study called “Toward a social psychology of flatulence: The interpersonal regulation of natural gas”. (The study was published in Psychology: a Quarterly Journal of Human Behavior.) This is a summary of that post, so keep in mind that it’s not mine!

For the study’s first part, the researcher took a group of people, and gave them a series of hypothetical situations in which someone farted. There were asked to rate their opinions of that person in categories like “malicious”, “careless”, or “humorous”, or “unsociable”. The farting was presented in different variables, like:

1) Whether you were in a group of strangers or a group of acquaintances.

2) Whether the fart was loud or silent.

3) Whether the fart was scentless or rank (the word used was in fact “rank”).

4) Whether the fart was deliberate.

5) Whether the person taking the questionnaire and hypothetically farting was male or female.

RESULTS!
  • People will rank you politely if your fart is silent and odorless (probably because they couldn't tell), but politeness ratings go down somewhat for the silent and deadly, and take a sharper dive when the fart is LOUD. Sound matters more than smell in terms of politeness, apparently.
  • People will think your loud farts are funny, with people who fart loudly being ranked as more humorous (though women did not find it as funny as men). If they know you did it deliberately, however, they are more likely they rank you as “malicious”, ESPECIALLY if the fart is rank (silent and odorless apparently means you're a relatively good person here).
  • Women are more forgiving of loud, accidental farts and don't ding the farter so much on “politeness”, so your reputation won't take so much of a hit if your fart was obviously an accident, and if you keep it silent. If you don't...well squeak your shoe really hard across the floor at the same time and hope it'll pass.

For the test’s SECOND part, people were given another hypothetical situation: Suppose you were in a group of strangers or acquaintances and feel a fart coming on. How hard are you going to try to hold it in if:
1) You know it will be almost silent and not smell?

2) You know it will be loud and not smell.

3) You know it will be silent and knock a cow over at 50 paces, or

4) You know it will be loud and turn the immediate area into a no fly zone.

RESULTS!
  • People universally said they'd hold it back the most for the loud and room-clearing variety, and the least for the silent and odorless. But they also said they'd try much harder to hold it back if they knew the fart could be traced to them.

CONCLUSION: If you're in a social situation, and feel a fart coming on, you could try and pass it off as funny, but if you know it's going to be loud, run while you still can. And if you know it's going to stink, try and blame it on someone else. (I've been saying this for years!) Again, thanks to Neurotic Physiology.)

Pop Quiz: Urinals!

Here’s your pop quiz for today. Read this and guess the gender of the writer!
Via.
People dislike peeing next to each other. So there is a little dance you do when you go into a multi-stall bathroom. You casually glance (no bending over to check, that's rude) to see if other stalls are occupied, and if so, how many. If no other stalls are occupied, you pick your favorite stall, maybe because it's the one that always has toilet paper, maybe it's the one with a slower automatic flush, maybe it's got interesting graffiti.
However, what if other stalls are occupied? Then, quick math takes over. You need to pick the stall that is the furthest from other people's pooping. Sometimes this is easy and you can pick a stall two over, with a single stall barrier in between you and your peeing partner.
Got it? The article is written by “scicurious” over at Neurotic Physiology. (I paraphrased it slightly.) But since the post was titled “The Urinal Problem”, I assumed that scicurious was male . . . after all, only men use urinals, right?

Wrong. When a woman pees in a toilet, it’s magically *ta-dah!* a urinal. Now I know. (And knowing is half the battle!)

Do not, I repeat, DO NOT pump your own gas!

By Robert S. Donovan
A study has found that the filthiest, most disgusting thing that people touch on the way to work is a gas pump.

Which actually makes sense! Yep, hand after greasy hand touches those pumps, and for some reason, we just don’t think about it. Sure, we’ll wipe down the handle of a shopping cart before pushing it through the grocery store, but not the gas pump. Go figure!

Anyway, here’s the worst things in order of grossness:
  • gas pumps,
  • handles on public mailboxes
  • escalator rails
  • ATM buttons
  • parking meters
  • crosswalk buttons

BTW, here in Oregon, it’s illegal for drivers to pump their own gas. So I don’t have to worry about touching the gas pump. High five!

On second thought, forget the high-five. Germs, you know.

We here at the Shy Bladder Institute welcome you!

Do you suffer from a shy bladder? Then welcome! We know, it's not easy suffering from this condition. When you to school or work, it would be nice if your bladder could socialize with the other bladders.

But rest assured that you're not alone! Seven people out of a hundred have bladders that avoid eye contact, blush easily, and speak in an inaudible whisper—

Wait, that's not the kind of shy bladder they mean? Never mind.

Porta-Potty Strategy!

You're at the fair or a concert and you have to use a Porta-Potty. But you're shocked at the long lines of people waiting to bust grumpies! What's your best bet for taking care of business quickly?

Over at the NPR Tumblr, Ian has some advice for you:
Your first instinct will be to choose the shortest line, but this can be wrong. Choose the line with the best female to male ratio, even if it’s not the shortest line. [In other words, pick the line with the most women.] Most men, if they’re going Number One, will see long lines and choose to go on a tree, fire hydrant, or friend. This means most men standing in line are going Number Two, which in turn means a line with more men will be moving much, much slower than a line with more women.

When will you put your hand in the toilet?

By jurvetson.
What have you dropped in the toilet? And what have you fished back OUT of it?

This is the rather odd question posed in a recent poll. The answers, from a poll of 1,000 women:
24% of women have frequently dropped their cell phones in the john. Other commonly splashed items included toothbrushes, make-up, wallets, and medicine.
Ah, but what would you reach INTO the toilet to fish out? Most women thought the underwater item needed to be worth $75 or more to take the plunge. But 16% thought that no matter WHAT the item was, there was no way they were going fishing for it.

Me? I wouldn’t go diving for a penny, but a nickel? You betcha!

Pee on the fly, watch it disappear!

When men pee, they really, really want to pee ON something. To keep men from spraying pee (a.k.a. "human spillage") toilet experts have been putting targets (of things like flies) on urinals for a while now.

But the new twist is the "thermal urinal fly." The idea is that as a man pees at the fly sticker, the heat of the urine causes the image of the fly to disappear. Like this!

Not bad! (From here, via BoingBoing.)

A Gross Mystery!

Let’s say that you have to poop. But you can’t! Maybe you’re on the school bus or in one of those pesky classes that you are forced to go to.

So you hold it!

But of course, you’ve made plans to TAKE  a poop. Maybe you’re going to wait until you get home. Or maybe you’re going to use the school’s restroom.

Either way, have you ever noticed that as you walk (or run!) to the toilet, the urge to poop gets stronger and stronger?

But the poop is inside of your butt. How does it know that you’re getting closer to a toilet? It’s not like it has eyes or anything.

Oh well. I guess it’s just a gross mystery!

The Rules of Grossness

Dude, that jacket
is very gross indeed
.
Coming up with the Gross Numbers got me thinking about what CAN and CAN'T be gross. Non-living things that were never alive (like mountains or math teachers) CAN'T be gross. So a jacket can’t be disgusting, unless it's made of Harris tweed. That’s a kind of wool that’s dyed with fungus and algae and then soaked in human urine. (Pee is good for “fixing” dyes into fabrics.)

Of Hairballs and Troy Polamalu

Over at this website, a writer makes an interesting point: A dirty room is much more disgusting than a handful of REAL dirt!

But why? Maybe it’s because dirt in the house is out-of-place.  So when we clean house, we clean the dirt out of it. But dirt in a garden is actually pretty cool. That’s where it belongs!

This works with hair, too. When we see hair on someone’s head, it doesn’t repulse us. It belongs there! But if the hair is dirty, than it’s gross. And since hair in a drain doesn’t belong there, it's nasty!

Hey can you imagine the kind of hairballs that Troy Polamalu pulls out of the shower drain?

They must be epic!

Gross Link Mania!

The hard-working staff at Ultra-Gross has been diving for disgusting links...and we found some!

—Why do people faint at the sight of blood and not barf? The Body Odd explains. (Sort of.)

—I've been meaning to tell you about this dead guy on a motorcycle for a while. Story here.

—And in Italy, police suspect pizza-makers of cooking their pies with wood stolen from coffins. In graveyards!

—National Public Radio had a story about turning chicken poop into power.

—Over here is an article about extreme potty training: These tots are pooping on toilets at the age of SIX MONTHS? (Dang, I was six YEARS old before I got the concept!)

—Awesome photographer flydime has a great set of photos of this years Festival of Tomatoes in Spain. You know, the one where people throw hundreds of thousands of tomatoes at each other?

—And finally, there's a the World Bog Snorkeling Championship is a race where swimmers race in a swamp. Why would they voluntarily immerse themselves in muck, mire, and mud? Because it's fun!

Poisoned Dog Dookie, Anyone?

I just read an article about disgust over at the Boston Globe. Let me sum up part of it this way: Human beings are weird. We are also SUPER-squeamish. For example, we’re disgusted by our own bodies— their odor, hair, fat, and every bodily fluid except for tears. (And pee!)

Paul Bloom, a Yale psychologist, talks about how illogical we are:
“You wouldn’t eat arsenic [a deadly poison] and you wouldn’t eat a dog turd. But even though eating arsenic is worse for you, [you have the same response to] the dog turd.”
Dr. Bloom is right. And not only that, I wouldn't eat a poisonous dog turd either!

Gross, Disgusting, Repulsive Animals (and the humans who love them!)

Yesterday, I was reading an article about animals that freak humans out. I actually disagreed with lots of its choices (manatees are NOT gross), but I'll admit that the star-nosed mole can still get to me.
Gary Meszaros/Photo Researchers
That nose with those fleshy feelers...oy vey! But the best animal photos ran in the reader submissions. Here's a few of the animals that people thought were repulsive...and sometimes, lovable!
Rebecca Bazell is asked, "Is that a pig on a leash?"

Jamie Peyton can't figure out where this turtle's face is. Neither can I!
Rick Korchak calls his cat A.L.F.: Alien Life Form.
Frank Funicello nominated the marabou stork.
And my award-winner is Carol Rabenhorst's picture of a sea anemone eating seaweed! Oh, blech.

For Those About to Be Grossed Out, We Salute You!

I guess if you’re easily grossed out, you wouldn’t be reading this blog. But do people who get disgusted have anything in common?

Yes! It turns out that the most easily grossed out are usually:

1.) Younger. Old people have seen it all before!

2.) Female. Men aren’t grossed out as easily as women.

3.) Conservative! This was a surprising one for me to learn. But in two different studies, it was found that people who are politically conservative were MORE likely to be grossed out!

Weird! This is NOT a political blog, so follow this link for study details. And if you get grossed out easily, don’t worry. The Big Book of Gross Stuff isn’t disgusting at all. The title is a joke! The book is mostly about flowers and kittens. (Mostly.)

Breakfast Cereal Can Help You Pee Better!

If you’re a guy, the odds are that you’re going to take a pee sometime and see a fly in the urinal. (Or sometimes just a little dot.)

It’s not a real fly, so it won’t fly away, but the odds are about 100% that you’ll pee on it.

And that’s why it’s there. According to Professor May Berenbaum, (she’s an expert on insects), men have “a deep-seated instinct to aim at targets.” And so if you put a target in a urinal, men won’t pee all over the place and make a mess. For example, after putting fly targets in the urinals at an airport in Amsterdam, there was an 80% drop in pee slop!

Soon there will be glow-in-the-dark fly targets for the nighttime pee patrol. (Ooh, if you were a troublemaker, you could stick a decal of a fly BY the toilet and see if men could resist aiming at it!)

But if you don’t have a urinal in your house, how can you aim for a fly? Instead, some parents keep a little bowl of Cheerios by the toilet. Before peeing, the boy or man about to pee tosses a Cheerio in the toilet. Then he aims at it! This keeps his pee stream IN the bowl instead of all over it. (Poor little Cheerio!)

On Second Thought, I'm Not THAT Thirsty

If you ever go to San Francisco, be sure to visit the Exploratorium. It's got all kinds of terrific science exhibits, including this one! The water in the fountain is perfectly safe, but most people are reluctant to drink it.

But I am not "MOST people"! (Are you?)
