Anus Horribilus
When it comes to talking about the chute that poop comes out
of, I prefer using the term “egress valve.” But the correct term is “anus.”
Okay, now this will seem offtopic, but be patient: Have you
ever heard of Optical Character Recognition? It’s a “text-recognition program”
that scans books. But a woman named Sarah Wendell has discovered that the
program can’t tell the difference between the words “arms” and “anus.”
Why should you care? Because as printed books are scanned
and put online, people are wondering why there is so much anus-raising,
anus-flinging and anus-wrapping.
Two examples:
- “When she spotted me, she flung her anus high in the air and kept them up until she reached me.”
- “Mrs. Nevile, in exquisite emotion, threw her anus around the neck of Caroline...”

The most amazing butt in the animal kingdom?
I just read an amazing article by Gwen Pearson about baby dragonflies.
As you know, they start life as underwater nymphs. (Mosquitoes do the same thing.) And these dragonfly nymphs breathe through the gills in their butts.
They also swim with their butts— as Pearson writes, by “un-clenching their rectum,
water in the rectal chamber can be jetted out at high pressure, pushing the
nymph forward through the water.”
Oh, and they eat with their butts (sort of). First, look at
this.
Gah! What just happened? A dragonfly nymph just went all "Alien" on a water bug! Specifically:
The ability of a dragonfly nymph to successfully snatch and grab food is directly related to its anus. The mouth-grabber is hydraulically activated. The dragonfly draws water in through the anus, clenches, then compresses its abdominal and thoracic muscles against the water-filled rectal chamber. This raises the internal body cavity pressure, and pushes the [jaws] out.
And those jaws are powerful: “the dragonfly nymphs generates a
pound WITH THEIR BUTTS.”
Swedish kids are so lucky
Biss och Kajs is a Swedish TV show that helps children
understand their bodily functions. (Its title is a take-off on the Swedish
words for "wee-wee" and "poo-poo".)
Its stars are two characters, Biss and Kajs. They are seated in the photo, next to the big butt. One is poop, the other a stream of pee. Wow. (Oh, and one more thing about this show: Russians really hate them!)

Ad Astra, Victor Glover!
Victor Glover is a former Navy pilot who just became an
astronaut. As part of his application process, he was asked to write a poem
about the experience of becoming an astronaut. Here’s what he came up with:
“Eyes fixed gazing off into space
My mind in awe of the human race

Happy to be here (by the) colonoscopy place.”
